Purchasing a Set of Clubs
With so many choices, it can be daunting for someone new to golf to get the right equipment. But if you take on board these few simple tips, you'll find it a lot easier to make the right choices.
Here are a few hints to get you started:
- Decide on a budget. Before you do anything, you'll need to decide how much you are willing to spend on a complete set of clubs. By a complete set I mean the bag, putter, irons and woods. You need to set a limit because the prices vary widely: from $150 to more than $2000.
- Next thing is to decide how often you want to play golf. If you're just beginning to play, you'll do well to get the cheapest ser that still does the job, and not worry about brands. Many sports shops carry complete sets that are often heavily reduced.
- Used sets of golf clubs are a good idea if $200-$300 is still too expensive. Almost all golf shops carry second hand clubs and bags, and offer quite good deals on them. Most of the time, however, you won't find a complete set of used golf clubs, so you'll have to purchase your bag, putter, woods and irons individually. If you want to get more serious later on, then you can most likely trade in your old clubs to get a new set.
- Don't get worried about determining the difference between one brand and another. Salesmen might try to push brand-name clubs on you, but when you're just beginning, it hardly matters what the brand is. If you are interested, ask the salesman tell you about the differences in brands.
- Look through the newspaper classifieds for ads for complete golf sets. On the internet there are a lot of golf sites offering complete sets of golf clubs. Keep eBay in mind as a place to look for golfing equipment. Graigslist.org is another great place to look for golf sets in your area. And remember that golf pro shops are great places to get pricing for golf clubs.
- Finally, I'd suggest asking around among friends - somebody will probably have an old set they will be willing to sell, or know somebody else who does.
