A Golf Beginners Profile
Making regular and consistent contact with the ball will be difficult when you're just setting out. Topped shots (hitting the top of the ball) and fat shots (contact with the ground), as well as making contact with the heel and toe of the clubface will be regular problems.
A slow swing speed can be put down to unfamiliarity with the right swing mechanics. Younger, stronger golfers can be excepted from this, but it is an even bigger problem with women, juniors and seniors, you lack the strength needed for high clubhead speeds. Without that speed, there will be difficulty in achieving both distance and height.
Beginners will probably also have difficulty keeping the clubhead in line with the ball in the swing. Beginners' clubheads usually approach balls with deviation from the target line, from out to in and at too steep an angle. This will often result in a slice - the shot curves to the right.
You might feel that it's hard to get height in your shots. Poor contact or a slow swing speed are the usual culprits in this. As a beginner, you often want to give the ball some help by scooping under it - this is a frequent cause of fat shots, especially with irons. But hitting a ball down will actually make it go up. A steep out-to-in swing path is also a major cause of this.
Beginners have no idea in the sand. You have to learn that in order to get the ball up and out of the sand you must hit the sand - not the ball - and the ball comes out on the sand.
